From a childhood in the Dominican Republic to falling in love with HipHop and R&B in New York City.
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, music was always a part of my life. I remember hearing the sounds of merengue, bachata, and salsa at family gatherings and on the radio. Even as a young child, I found myself drawn to the rhythms and melodies of the Spanish music that surrounded me. As I grew older, my love for music only deepened. I started listening to more artists and genres, discovering new sounds, and expanding my musical horizons.
However, my life took a major turn when you moved to New York City in 1992. Suddenly, I was surrounded by a completely different musical landscape, one dominated by HipHop and R&B. I found myself drawn to the beats and rhymes of artists like Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Busta Rhymes, and DMX, as well as the soulful vocals of singers like Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Babyface, and Aaliyah.
As I immersed myself in this new musical world, I found that my love for music only continued to grow. I started attending concerts and shows, immersing myself in the live music experience. Through it all, I realized that music was more than just a hobby for you – it was a passion, a way of life. It connects me to my roots in the Dominican Republic while also opening up new doors and experiences in New York. It gave me a way to express myself and connect with others, regardless of language or culture.
Looking back on my journey as a music fan, I’m grateful for all the experiences and memories that music has given me, music has been a constant companion and source of joy throughout my life.
